I smiled when I saw the Italianamerican recommendation because my husband and I just watched this last night. So good. So much like my own family (except for the New York accent; my Italian ancestors landed in Boston). Martin Scorsese is the same age as my mom, and his mom reminded me so much of my maternal grandmother, who was also named Catherine! The whole thing gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling and also made me laugh a lot. Gotta make Grandma’s sauce one of these days...

Looks like you have cedar waxwings visiting your bird bath! Unbelievably beautiful birds, they're colored like flying mai-tai's, and the older they get, they grow waxy tips on their wings. Sounds like the topic of one of your blog posts!

Avoiding target fixation is a big part of mountain bike coaching. If you’re worrying about the tree, you’ll hit the tree.

I watched Robert Egger's The Lighthouse for the second time this week! I can't get enough of it. So much so that I BOUGHT it on Amazon Prime - who buys movies these days?! Anyway, I was inspired to check it out again because I watched a local film to me in Cornwall, UK called Enys Men. It's all shot on 16mm with post-synced audio and it's excellent. It's a kind of folk horror film and it's really intriguing. Check it out if you can!

I had to come back to this older post to say: thank you for the ear candy here! El Bueno y El Malo is already one of my go-to albums for the year. Perfect music for driving.

Nick Cave--always articulate thoughtful writing. I’m reading Faith, Hope and Carnage his latest book in discussion with Sean O’Hagan. https://www.nickcave.com/faith-hope-and-carnage/

I borrowed it from the library but think I might have to have my own copy so I can mark it up!

PS I’m loath to link to Amazon--heres a blurb from his website. I figure ya’ll are smart enough to figure out how to get a copy!

Good call on flipping through the whole Esquire issue. (Flipping through old magazines is a guilty pleasure of mine.) Some random things that jumped out at me: the Game Boy ad and mention in the holiday gift guide, the Absolut Vodka ad, the E. Jean Carroll article, the sad feeling of how far the magazine has fallen since then--it has so much less content now!

The most admirable quality regarding Sheng Wang is that he doesn’t rely on vulgarity in an attempt to be funny. He is hilarious because of his timing and tone. Refreshing.
