Another fun and inspirational newsletter - thanks Austin! Speaking of maps ... have y’all seen/read David Bryne’s book, Arboretum?

And for the “office hours”, two questions—one serious, one fun—

1. I feel like I’ve mostly been more of a consumer/observer than a maker—any suggestions to someone looking to get better at that later in life esp. when the breadth of the practice seems overwhelming? (I’m guessing the answer is “just start making” or “start stealing” but I’ll let you elaborate!)

2. You’ve been mentioning about how much you’re into biking these days and I’m enjoying watching your journey(s)—but I think I missed how and why did you decide to buy a bike?

Yeah, you’ve set me on the map obsession too—got The Writer’s Map from the library and it’s wonderful so far. I’ll be looking for prints of some of these maps for sure!

And all the map discussion reminded me of a software UX (user experience) talk I attended a few years back by Jeff Eaton (@eaton) and he used maps to relate to the artifacts used to model website content.

He asked “What is ‘Chicago’” and displayed satellite, street, transit, historical, restaurant maps and more. None of the maps represents Chicago in its entirety, each has a different focus on a specific aspect of that area.

And oddly enough, the title of the presentation (when I saw it anyway) was…”The Map is Not the Territory”😄

Last one I swear—started thinking about the cool superhero HQ cutaways in the comics of my youth and lo and behold (includes Kirby, Eisner, Walt Kelly)

Your description of yourself is "a writer who draws." Not "an artist who writes." I've wondered about that.

Are you a professional ‘Newsletter Writer’ I heard someone describe themself that way recently… anyway, that’s my question. I guess it’s more a question of can this kind of ‘showing of the work’ be ‘the work’. - Yeah, all that is the question!

Jerry Gretzinger has a really, really interesting project that blends maps, art, and a unique fortune-telling card game. He's been doing it for decades. Highly recommend checking it out! https://www.wired.com/2013/09/jerry-gretzinger-map-ukrania/
