The school where I'm the librarian does a cool thing called interest groups, where for a few weeks, a few times a year, kids spend an hour on Friday afternoons pursuing an interest of theirs in a group that a staff member has put together. I have been wanting to do a zine interest group and I didn't get it done this year, but I'm hoping to next year and to then build a zine library. These kids (grades 1-4) are so interested in writing their own stories and reading each other stories. I'm pretty sure a zine group will be high interest.
Thank you so much for sharing the PDF for What Does a Seed Look Like and the instructions and video for making a zine out of one piece of paper. My afternoon has been really fun and I learned about seeds. Getting your Friday post is like getting Highlights when I was little. :)
Oh this is so funny! My sister just told me about her friend, who is an old friend of R. Crumb's. She met up with him in New York the other week for the first time in years. Apparently they were at a restaurant and Alec Baldwin was there with his wife - Alec stopped at their table on the way out, making some sort of comment, and they chatted for a second but neither of them knew who the other one was. After a few minutes my sister's friend said, "Alec Baldwin, meet Robert Crumb. Robert Crumb, meet Alec Baldwin." Alec Baldwin freaked out and said, "YOU'RE R. CRUMB??!!" The story was all the more incredible to me because I honestly didn't realize R. Crumb was even still alive lol.
I hadn't heard "Maycember" before, but as a teacher, I appreciate the word. My colleagues and I all agree, in May, your teacher-friends are not ok. Apparently, neither are parents. Maybe we all need to gang up and turn this ship around.

Not European, but Jorge Luis Borges came to UT in the early 60s and kept coming back in fascination. See for example the introduction of the UT press edition of his book Dreamtigers (El hacedor); also these articles: https://sites.utexas.edu/ransomcentermagazine/2015/10/22/texas-the-state-that-stole-the-heart-of-literary-giant-jorge-luis-borges/ and

I’m looking forward to Black Bag and the Spiegelman American Masters episode.
This is a great newsletter I’m especially interested in Georg Grosz in Texas and TS Elliot Really cool 😎

I love the NYT piece on R. Crumb!
Seamus Heaney and Wendall Berry--two of my favorite writers. And that illustration was the bomb.
Thanks, Austin! I look forward to this newsletter every week!

As I’m reading about the creation of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, the sound system of the diner I’m in is playing the tune.
Right now.
Still playing…
