My connection to LOVE this week is Robert Indiana, creator of the LOVE sculpture. I moved to the Philly area in 2016. I slowly but surely learned to love all the “Jawn” (all things Philly). In July of 2024, I moved to Indiana, home of Robert (Clark) Indiana and saw what I think is his first LOVE sculpture at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Fast forward to this week and the Philly LOVE sculpture was transformed to “Love, Hurts,” as a tribute to Eagles QB, Jalen Hurts. THEN, I was at Barnes and Noble today and saw that LEGO has made a LOVE sculpture set. This popular piece of art has given me a bridge between my old life and the new.
I love all your writing Austin, but your ten things newsletter is my favorite.
Today's #ten is especially close to my heart. I remember making snail mail newsletters back in the day - because we didn't have social media and most people were just beginning to use email more. It was a dream of mine to publish my own magazine.
Good luck and blessings to this group of young people. (And omg, I sound so OLD and I'm only 50!) 💙💚🦋
Rutherford Chang! RIP. And wow, such an interesting fellow to dive into this morning. Substack is the only “fun” app I have on my phone right now and it’s been great to see myself researching things I read about and doing some more deep dives and quiet contemplation instead of endless scrolling. Thank you for always sharing cool people to learn about
Your substack is so useful! I need the reminder to study something you love in depth. I've recently realized that I am probably undiagnosed ADD. At almost age 66 I need to narrow down some interest, particularly with art/creativity, do I draw, paint, sew, write, make decorative sweets? I love it all. I saw a you tube awhile back who advised artists to find one thing (maybe he read your book) but like seagulls, or rabbits, or a particular fruit, whatever etc. I sort of chose grapes (long story) so maybe it doesn't matter the media but just the subject (as long as you love it) Thanks again, much appreciate you.
So good to reread the post about studying something you love in depth! Makes me realize that kids, when given enough free time in their days, often dig into their own obsessions this way naturally. 💕
Love #8 especially! A really good friend once asked me “why do you deny your passion?” I keep that question in my heart. Letting myself be dissuaded from going deeper into what I love can be easy, especially when I’m interested in so many things, or the world tells me or I tell me it’s “pointless.” Trying to keep Chase Jarvis’s advice about attention in my mind, too. Letting go can be hard. I feel like a dog, sometimes, and there are so many squirrels that need chasing.
Valentines Zine ♥️ YES! Thank you Austin! My favorites are #’s 4-5-8 & 10. Love the dance between the desks as well. Off to make my Valentines Zine. Appreciate everything you share-

Austin, you are a treasure. I always discover something new and wonderful in your newsletters. Thank you!

Love the 90 year old journaller! I mean I guess I’m up to almost 60 years but I can’t claim it was consistent!
Also, I am having fun playing with a zine. I am starting the dance, though still more analog than digital as I explore.
this made me smile
