When I taught at a small college in North Carolina, on four occasions I traveled to Europe with student groups. We often prepared our own food (staying in hostels or rentals) so had occasion to go food shopping. These were such productive moments: excellent ways of learning from and interacting with the local scene.

Now, no matter where I travel, I try to visit local food markets!

Love it! I moved to New Mexico from my home state of Ohio in February of last year. I rented in Santa Fe my first here, and ended-up purchasing a home in Rio Rancho, closer to Albuquerque. There's a beauty to the high desert here that grows on you.

My first airplane flight was a visit to New Mexico when I was an undergrad in the 80's, along with my roommate to visit her dad. It was a memorable trip that included a drive on the Turquoise Trail. We stopped in Madrid, which was very tiny at the time (maybe it still is). I bought a coffee mug at an art gallery as a memento of the trip, and am sipping my morning coffee from it as I type this. I've never managed to make it back for a proper visit, but would love to someday.

We went to New Mexico last summer and it was incredible (we also hit Meow Wolf, the Turquoise Trail and the High Road). We also stayed in an earthship house outside of Taos! This year we're not feeling up for a big air travel situation so we're probably going to do a New England road trip. But I had a moment the other week where something reminded me of NM and I had this bolt of feeling that I NEEDED to get back to the high desert. Maybe next year!

I didn’t get the job I mentioned a newsletter or two ago, but I did get a copy of Citizen Printer signed by Amos yesterday at the SF Art Book Fair! Was delighted to realize you wrote the foreword. Got a lot of other fun stuff at the fair too!

I took a road trip from Key West to Santa Fe last September…just my dog and me. It was incredible and that New Mexico sky! We spent a month there, and it was so healing when I really needed it. Coincidentally spent a night in Austin where I purchased a signed copy of Steal Like an Artist at The Painted Porch.

I have loved "What's Opera, Doc?" since my childhood in the late 70s/early 80s in Houston. It is sublime and heartbreakingly beautiful--and of course, completely ridiculous. Like life itself.

Grew up escaping from the H-town swamp to NM most summers and worked as a camp counselor there in college. Headed there next week to escape the post-Hurricane Beryl mosquitos. I can't wait. It truly is the Land of Enchantment.

Fantastic. Next time I go I want to stay outside of town as much as I can and wake up in that landscape. Have a great trip.

Also may I just add that I have always particularly loved Shelley Duvall in the film of my fave F. Scott Fitzgerald short story Bernice Bobs her Hair ❤️

I skipped the RIPs this issue — there’s going to be so many next week :(

I had forgotten that film! I think it was originally on American playhouse? Loved Shelley Duvall in that.

When I was a child my uncle who was in the air force was stationed in Roswell. Every summer we would drive from Fort Worth to Roswell. We would always go to Carlsbad Caverns. Great memories. I agree with checking out libraries when traveling. I have been to Scotland five times and try to visit as many village libraries and book stores as possible. Fabulous way to get a bookmark and bookbag collection! 🕊💙📚🎶

Awesome! I am from Santa Fe and my son and I just did a road trip back for the first time in 10 years. It was really cool to experience it as a tourist. The Chile soothed my soul and that desert son has a way of shining light on more than just your face. Meow Wolf was a first for us too. What an experience. It was a magical trip and yet it made me happy to return home to the beach.

My kid has SO many questions about clouds right now. These book recommendations could not have been more perfectly timed.

#3: Seeing multiple rainbows in one week :-)

#10: Relief. I love the pictures Austin. Especially the rainbow & that gorgeous sky. I took a trip to New Mexico back in 2011. Fell in love with it while there. Thank you for reminding me.

The Maritime history of the Great Lakes is so interesting and I am only beginning to learn about it . Sand dunes fresh berries friendly natives no waiting at the pickle ball court and not above 79 degrees. Lovely 😊
