Love the Disney theme Austin! And I'm adding Return to Monkey Island to my "to play" list -- the first titles made me fall in love with the genre. Other great games include Day of the Tentacle, Kyrandia, Sam & Max.
This sounds like an amazing trip that your kids will remember forever. I can’t wait to tell my husband about the Disneyland podcasts. After our last trip there (we live in Southern California), he got really into a YouTube series called Defunctland, which is about abandoned amusement parks (and other things, but originally amusement parks).
Also, reading slumps are a drag. Have you read Kevin Wilson’s new one, Now is Not the Time to Panic?
Just in case you’re not aware of its existence and want to add it to your list of things to do the next time you’re in San Francisco, there’s a Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio, right next to the Golden Gate Bridge. We went there in 2014 to see a Mary Blair exhibition and were surprised by how much we ended up enjoying the museum itself, who is more for adults than children. It was there that I had a moment, realizing that yes, at one point, Disney was just a guy called Walt who drew a mouse with a pencil on a piece of paper.
Also, a little anecdotal, but when I was still living in Paris, in Montmartre, our favorite theater was the Studio 28, which among other endearing traits had funky-weird-colorful light fixtures designed by Jean Cocteau, who was the theater’s “godfather”.
as someone who finds amusement parks completely overwhelming in every way - you MAY have convinced me to look at them from a different perspective - i will definitely listen to the 3 part podcast though ;) because - endless curiosity :) thanks austin
I was there too! My husband and I got to go on a tour inside Walt’s apartment. Highly recommend! Such a small space for entertaining, a time capsule of sorts, fun to imagine what it was like to live there hiding in plain sight.
Have you read Christopher Moore The Stupidest Angel? A wonderful Christmas Story, Also his book Lamb, while not specifically Christmas is is about Jeasus from the POV of his Childhood friend. I think if is as irreverent reverent.
There are several great picture books about Mary Blair. She also illustrated several Golden Books.
My daughter graduated from SFSU. We live near Anaheim. Home to DLand Resort. The drive south from SF down the Pacific Coast is as adventure within itself. Big Sir is magical. A mountain range drive that hugs the blue Pacific Ocean. Say what you want about LA traffic, but as soon as you hit Ventura, you'll love Southern California.
Oh, and Taco Bell Drawing Club Visit for the win. ❤️
Re: greaterbLA area -
1. LACMA - plan on at least a day.
2. Norton Simon - plan on at least a day.
No Shit Sherlock.
Re: Disneyland:
It is always better with kids!
We’ll, Substack sucks!
I think I’m all subscribed - but I’m not.
Muy stupido!
Have you read The Kingdom Keepers series of kids’ books? https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9848799

Mary Blair is my favorite! You can see her influence in the work of modern animators like Claire Keane.
Hope y'all are having a great week, Austin!
