I read Comedy Book just before the new year and really, really enjoyed it. There is a lot of smart, insightful analysis of comedy that doesn't get bogged down or take away from the joy of the art form. Fox also poses some really great questions to ruminate on, especially around truth, accountability, and comedy. I think you'll dig it!
Austin: Just so you know. I ordered "Steal Like an Artist," over 10 days ago for a friend in Boulder, and Amazon still does not have a shipping date. Very frustrating. Has it gone out of print? (PS The Holdovers was great).
Thanks for mentioning The Denial of Death, which I’d not heard of before this, but his theme has cropped up recently in sermons I’ve heard and other spiritual discussions. I’m putting both it and White Noise on my TBR for this year.
I'm having a hard time hitting 2024 with a full head of steam, and thus have been doing as you suggest: losing myself in books.
Currently reading: Rick Rubin's A Creative Act (more sipping than reading, truly, as this one invites a lot of introspection) and When Nothing Else Matters, a book from 2004 about Michael Jordan's last comeback. The latter is the best sports book I've ever read, a treatise on legacy, mortality, ambition, addiction, and hubris.
I love The Wonder Boys! Great movie
Happy new year!
I would love to hear what you think of Sebald. I have a life long love for his books and reread The Emigrants every other year. https://inktales.me/2018/04/17/holiday-journal-2/

Looks like it’s temporarily out of stock -- sometimes happens over the holidays

That Jordan book sounds incredible! Adding it to my list
Thank you Austin. The Holdovers was my favorite movie of 2023.
