Good evening - Your request reminded me to share with you my son Max's feature film AKILLES which won Best Student Feature at the GTX (Georgetown TX) Film Festival this fall - near Austin! This is an action parody of the battle royal genre (not noir, but your family may still enjoy - I think there are two curse words used, and stylized violence - so appropriate for middle schoolers and up perhaps) AKILLES also won Best Student Film, Best Action Scene and Best Visual FX at the New York Long Island Film Festival, and Best Cinematography at the Brightside Film Festival in Jersey City, NJ. It is now available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbcjrbON49U About 1 hour, 5 minutes. Thanks!!
For Hitchcock, I think you can’t beat Rope or the less well-known Shadow of a Doubt, with an outstanding and exceedingly creepy Joseph Cotton in lead. Both are excellent, but maybe too much for youngsters.
Awesome. I was able to attend The Glen Workshop (Image Journal's July arts, faith, and mystery week) a few years ago and took David Chang's creative calligraphy class. Fantastic instructor and person. And I have all of these supplies, I should practice with them now too!
I just subscribed because I’ve committed to spending the next 4 years on a news media detox - reading books, looking at (and making) art and following rabbit holes of recommendations. This week’s news touches us all (I’m in Australia), but if there is a silver lining, it is a return to art.
A while back, I made an ink and water drawing of a dying rose whose beauty I wasn’t ready to let go of. It was not only therapeutic, it’s quite lovely still. I’d share it if I could.
Synchronicity—my favourite mood? Feeling? Thing? Lanecia Rouse was one of the first artists I followed on Instagram and aspire to owning one of her artworks one day. Such an inspiration to my own amateur art.
FREAK KINGDOM is available for free via Hoopla right now. I don't know how Hoopla works with all of the libraries, but mine is the LA County Library. Maybe your library has it too?
You might look into the Navajo perception of time as circular. It’s a bit different way of looking at time as a wheel.
I will!

Oh cool, thanks for sharing! Congrats to Max

Can't remember if I've seen SHADOW OF A DOUBT. I do like older b/w Hitchcock
Double Indemnity or This Gun for Hire are my faves. L.A. Confidential too.
For movies, why not High Anxiety, Mel Brooks. Noir vibes, funny & Hitchcock.
For drums, I recommend looking up Stanton Moore. Great musician and teacher.
I keep thinking this week of your article with the tree planted that would be there long after Hitler was gone.

oh cool! really had fun getting to know David
I'm guessing you’ve already seen the original “Time Bandits.” I think it has a nice light touch of darkness.
Time Bandits has been in the queue for a while, we just haven't thrown it on yet. Soon.
"Casablanca"!
I think they're almost old enough to be into Casablanca, good idea
Is "Arsenic and Old Lace" the November kind of noir?
I think of it more as dark screwball comedy than noir, but it's still great for this time of year.

Yes! Welcome.
I loved Rear Window have they watched it? I look forward to reading your newsletters.
I have been meaning to rewatch REAR WINDOW for a while now. They might be into it.
Whiplash is a good word for this.
Thank you for being here.

I really hate how we can't share images in the comments. I'll do an open thread in chat soon

And Lynda Barry’s interview pure delight!
TPWD just voted to buy a bunch of new property, including 1,721 acres on the Frio near Garner State Park!
awesome!
