Describe a perfect day where you live. Sunset over the rainbow Joshua Tree

Hey y’all,

Esther Pearl Watson is an artist in Joshua Tree, California. To celebrate the opening of her new store, Get Lost Art Supply & Mojave Mystery Mercantile, we conducted this typewriter interview via the magic of the United States Postal Service. (For a plain-text version with links and extra notes from me, see the P.S. below.)

"What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes?" (C. Jung) [cutting out paper dolls]
I "smoke" a cigarette pencil in the studio. Do you perform any silly rituals when you're working? Dance to the music.
What's the most important piece of furniture you own? Tell us about it. Flat files - we move it around in the studio and when we relocate.
What's your relationship to music? Do you sing or play an instrument? What song do you never get tired of? Flute in school / Ukulele / Claude Debussy

These typewriter interviews are made possible by the kind support of paid subscribers!

What do you do for exercise? Do you detect any mental, spiritual, or creative benefits? < 80 degrees run outside > 80 degrees run inside
Do you have any hobbies? Do you collect anything? Books
Do you see yourself as part of an artistic lineage? Who would you place in your creative family tree? My family - my great grandma - my dad - me - my sister teresa - my husband mark - lili + her husband keiji
John Waters says he has "youth spies" that keep him up-to-date on culture. Do you have any youth spies? No. I have lazy sleeping dogs that don't help.
Do you have any advice for people who want to be more creative? Find a typewriter and ask others what they do creatively. Other people are inspiring.

Thanks to Esther for being the 30th participant in this series of typewriter interviews. Follow her and her new store on Instagram: @estherpearlwatson and @getlost_artsupply.

Shout-out to paid subscribers who buy me the time to do all the email coordinating, typing, snail-mailing, scanning, transcribing, and editing that goes into these. You can make more happen with a click of a button:

P.S. I think I first came to Esther’s work through her flying saucer paintings:
