“What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes?” (C. Jung) I drew.

Hey y’all,

Adam Koford has been a freelance illustrator and cartoonist for nearly 30 years. To celebrate the launch of his new Substack, Your Friend and Mine, we conducted this typewriter interview via the magic of the United States Postal Service. (For a plain-text version with links and a few extra notes from me, see the P.S. below.)

What do you do for exercise? Do you detect any mental, spiritual, or creative benefits? I walk 5-7 miles every day, usually very early. It's magic.
I “smoke” a cigarette pencil in the studio. Do you perform any silly rituals when you’re working? I try to keep a yo-yo nearby. (This is basically all I can do. Ups and downs.)
Do you have any hobbies? Do you collect anything? Trinkets Records Cats Friends Books Pens
Describe a perfect day where you live. It begins with a hike to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Then time spent with friends and family and drawing and an old movie I'm introducing to someone.

These typewriter interviews are made possible by the kind support of paid subscribers just like you.

What is it about cats? To hold a cat's face in your hands and stare into its eyes is to get a glimpse of eternity or perhaps nothingness.
What's your relationship to music? Do you sing or play an instrument? What song do you never get tired of? I possess no musical skill or talent. These are the records which, if I hear one song I gotta hear em'all: - Talking Heads, True Stories - Katy Kirby, Cool Dry Place - Cat Stevens, Tea for the Tillerman - De La Soul, Buhloone Mind State
John Waters says he has “youth spies” that keep him up-to-date on culture. Do you have any youth spies? There are two teens in my household, yet I am the one who introduced them to the new Olivia Rodrigo album???
Do you see yourself as part of an artistic lineage? Who would you place in your creative family tree? This is how my dad drew cars.
Do you have any advice for people who want to be more creative? Figure out what works for YOU, and try not to be too precious. [Drawing of Monet among 80+ canvases, all in various states of completion, Savoy Hotel, London, 1899]

Big thanks to Adam for being the 28th participant in this series of typewriter interviews!

P.S. Because Adam mentioned introducing an old movie to someone as part of his perfect day, here’s a great list of old movies he recommended to me once upon a time:
