Stewart Brand — first part of his interview with Ezra Klein is utter nonsense. He maintains the back to the landers failed. That they found the country boring, that they couldn’t find work, that they couldn’t make a living and they moved back to the city apparently with great relief. Maybe in California, but in the Midwest, I personally know Five people who have made quite a success of going back to the land, moved back in the 70s, raised families, started successfully businesses, and still live there. Some of them are successful organic farmers. Some of them have found other ways to make a living, but still stay on the land. Several are behind the organic valley co-op, which is a highly successful, probably the biggest organic retailer in the country. Of course, if you’re completely unrealistic about what you’re doing and if you never get to know your neighbors, then you’re not gonna make it —anybody could’ve told you that— but plenty of back to the landers knew that even before they moved there. Maybe it’s just a Midwestern thing that we’re already closer to farm life than people in the California hippie movement. it’s hard to take Stuart Brand seriously after that enormous error in judgment and in perception maybe he’s just not in touch anymore
I need to dig some of the "Show up!" snails out of my flat files
Austin lost two great creative people when Ed and Elizabeth left. It's hard not to feel like good people keep leaving while bad people keep coming, but we must celebrate what we still have, or at least, that's my take
Snails have both male and female genitals and fight with each other over who gets to do the impregnating. But if their spiral spirals the other way around, they won’t match up with snails whose shells spiral the usual way.
Speaking of plants and gardening metaphors, I highly recommend "This is a Gardening Show" with Zach Galifianakis. Short, hilarious, inspiring, and great for gardening metaphors about life. Family friendly too.
Congrats on being a featured book on Morning Joe this morning. Ryan Holliday does a great segment with Joe and you were right there on screen! Way to go!
Love the snail mascot and can’t wait for your new book - pre-ordered!
Entangled life is a wonderful book! Great newsletter this week, I especially loved the seed bit
I love the animated snail!!

I love #1 especially—my “Show Up” snail print is framed and lives on my day-job desk as a reminder of play, creativity, and being present for others.
But the Montaigne drawing reminds me that I miss Edward Carey and his drawings on Twitter during COVID. Such a kind and generous soul.
I hope to make time for block printing this summer.
Recommended your work this past Sunday in a workshop on play I did.

Thank you for recommending my work!
I like that take—plenty of small batch and big batch good left in Austin. Gotta support each other.

I once joked, about relating to snails, "If necessary, a snail can go fuck itself" (LOL)
