Of course I love Master and Commander too, but I was surprised to see Drumline on Stephanie Zacharek’s list! Always loved that movie - mostly because I’m a drummer - but the band scenes are fun!
this made me cry a little, each item and then the final quote, and yes that's probably because i'm going a little insane too as this world seems to be falling apart around me just as my children are becoming adults and i am getting old and trying to keep up my former belief that most people are actually good and want to help each other
also, you can subscribe to the Onion in print!? I wasn't sure they even distributed print copies anymore, i immediately clicked through but it is just spinning and spinning. So, is that a joke, or were so many people in my same mood that it crashed their site?
Try it again! FWIW, I think the world is completely rotten and then I go for a walk in my neighborhood and it’s always revealed to not be true! Works every time. (Linus Van Pelt says, “I love mankind! It’s the people I can’t stand!” But I think the opposite, actually)
As a Canadian I feel like I practically grew up with Catherine O'Hara, watching SCTV from the early days. It still stands as one of the funniest shows out there, along with Codco. I honestly didn't understand how much she meant to me until she died. It turns out I looked up to her. She was a beacon.
Re: the 50 underappreciated films list. First off 20th Century Women is a gorgeous masterpeice, I love Mike Mills so much. But secondly, I was down and out for the day after one of those classic middle aged preventative care "procedures" that shall remain nameless. I layed on the couch and watched Dolomite is My Name, and maybe it was my general state of mind of relief (and permission to lay on the couch all day) but it was the most joyous and delightfully fun movie I've seen in ages, I recommend it to everyone.
That movie was so strange for me - I disliked it a lot as I was watching it, but the feeling of it really haunted me, even to this day. I always think of it as the closest thing to the sort of dream I often have where the entire dream is spent fighting a thousand distractions to get back to the person I'm trying to see.
I signed Montaigne out of the library based on your previous recommendation. Hats off to you, that is some dense reading. It’s challenging! Maybe a post as a guide on which essays to start with?
There’s a tiny Penguin Great Ideas collection called ON SOLITUDE you could start with. M.A. Screech’s translation is the one I like. (Or you could just skip it and go on living your life!)
